Sahara: Mexico and Paraguay Reaffirm Support for Mutually Acceptable Political Solution


​New York (United Nations) - Mexico and Paraguay reaffirmed, Thursday before the 4th Committee of the United Nations, their support for a "political, just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution" to the Moroccan Sahara issue.


"The Mexican government reaffirms its support for the ongoing negotiation process to achieve a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the Sahara issue", and this "in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly", Mexico's representative told the members of the Committee.

Welcoming the efforts of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the Mexican diplomat called for continued efforts to move towards a solution acceptable to all the concerned parties.

He also stressed the importance of MINURSO in monitoring and maintaining the ceasefire.

For its part, Paraguay also reiterated its support for the ongoing process under the aegis of the United Nations aimed at achieving a political settlement to the artificial dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

"Paraguay supports the ongoing political process, under the aegis of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, on the basis of the relevant Security Council resolutions, including resolution N 2494 adopted in October 2019, which highlights the need to reach a realistic, achievable and lasting political solution based on compromise,” said the representative of Paraguay at this meeting.
